How we rank
Trading VPS FAQ
What is a forex VPS?+
A forex VPS is a virtual private server — a remote Windows machine hosted in a data center — that runs your trading platform (MT4, MT5, cTrader, NinjaTrader, etc.) around the clock. Because it lives near the broker’s servers and never powers off, your charts, alerts and automated strategies keep running even when your own computer is asleep or your internet goes down.
Do I need a VPS to run an EA or trading bot?+
Not strictly — an expert advisor or bot will run on your own PC — but the moment your machine sleeps, reboots for updates or loses connection, the strategy stops and can miss entries, exits or stop-losses. A VPS keeps automation online 24/7 with a stable connection, which is why most algo and set-and-forget traders use one.
How much latency do I need?+
Lower is always better, but what’s “enough” depends on your style. Scalpers and high-frequency strategies want sub-millisecond latency to the exchange, which means a server physically in the same data center as your broker (CME, NY4 or LD4). Swing and position traders running slower bots can be comfortable with a few milliseconds. Match the VPS location to where your broker or exchange is hosted.
What’s the difference between a managed and a self-managed VPS?+
On a self-managed VPS you handle setup, updates and platform installs yourself, which is cheaper and more flexible. A managed VPS has the provider’s team configure the platform, apply updates and offer hands-on support — better if you’d rather not touch the server. Our comparison notes which providers offer managed hosting.
How much does a trading VPS cost?+
Entry plans in our catalog start under $10/month and premium ultra-low-latency plans in exchange data centers run $35–$89/month. Price tracks proximity to the exchange, guaranteed uptime and hardware (CPU cores and RAM). Cheaper isn’t always worse — but sub-millisecond, exchange-colocated servers cost more for a reason.
Which trading platforms can a VPS run?+
Most trading VPS providers support MT4, MT5, cTrader, NinjaTrader, Sierra Chart, Tradovate and TradingView-linked bridges. Before buying, confirm the provider explicitly supports your platform and, if you run automation, that expert advisors and bots are allowed — every provider’s supported platforms are listed on its Wickium profile.
